Why does every server nowdays have to have a donation system when one of the most successful and popular servers did not have one?

often people say no money = no server... well if you dont have money to open a server, then dont.

Some servers are opened, because owner have money, other servers are opened and count on donations to exists. And third servers are opened to make money for their owners - call it bussiness.
And when money flow goes low, server is closed. Soon a new server is born under new name and so on...

Thats why so many servers come and go...

And why should they waste their precious time and money to make a "donation free" server for you? Did you play on offi back in the day? Was it free? No! By donating, you show your gratitude and help them cover some of the costs at the same time. No one is forcing you to donate; most people don't. Ofc like rotislav said, some servers are purely made for money (like mid rates and pvp). So stay away from pay to win projects
