doh

You know, I went on their discord channel, I sat there for about 1 hour to 1 1/2. Talk about paint drying and grass going. This forum is way more fun, think I will stick here.

We can be bump brothers.

I asked a few questions while I was there and did not like the answers. I always felt that if you used the Java version, you should at some point share your work. If everyone did that, we could have one hell of a good server.

Instead of taking decades to where we are now, it would have taken maybe two years. And we would be far ahead of where we are now.

Also a big problem with coding in java is that a lot of people rip other peoples code. Or they dont share. Its a cluster *uck of a problem. And I do not like it.

Anyway, they refused to tell me if they were using Jave or Retail code and said no to sharing.

They also said that most packs are infected with back doors etc. But I dont see that with say L2J Server etc. They are open source and share their code. It might be true if you are dealing with pre compiled packs.

But just think of where we would be now if people didn't hog code like pigs.

And as a last point. I worked on a few projects. I found them to be utterly horrible. Lot of bent egos, infighting, arguments over nothing. And people leaving left and right. It was just a horrible time

Sorry for the rant.

Same here, but sometimes the politics behind the scenes dictate how long your fun lasts. Especially when its free.

True true. Politics is a root of all evil. Can you imagine how awesome it would be if multiple server owners decided to make a single server that they all worked for? Instead of 10 servers with having 50-100 online each that they barely work on, there would be a single large one with multiple admins fixing issues and improving things on the go... But nooo, everyone needs to have something extra, something on their own, and eventually they all fail  But such is life I guess. /bump

That's what I meant with hogging code, infighting etc. Hubris and greed, yet the good people at L2JServer give their code and hard work away for the love of the game.

Go figure /bump

Maybe that's the problem though? With the files being too accessible, there are too many servers (as opposed to everyone having to work harder to make their own, perhaps bringing more admins together) :? ? Over. Err, I mean /bump

Just because you can get the files, does not mean you can run a server. Or a good server at that.

Bored /bump

True true, but making them less accessible would filter out more bad ones... But maybe it would filter out some good ones too :? Who knows. Anyway /bump

You can usually tell a crap server right away. Just ask GoDs3nD. I think I read a post abot this that detailed how he/she does it. Quite informative. They should have stickied that post.

I know GS is quite knowledgeable about these things, but I'm not sure if I even want to dissect servers as such. Usually I go to server to have fun and it doesn't matter to me that much if it's objectively high quality or not :| Here comes an average quality /bump

Do you really want to waste a month or two on farming, and then the server vanishes? If I play someplace I try to do a bit of detective work first.

If its L2J then you know they didn't pay. If its retail like code they are most likely paying a yearly sub, and that usually means P2W type server.

Teaching moment /bump

Good point. The way I see it, if I go to a PvP serbidorki, I probably don't care much at all, but if I want to join a lowrate where I intend to stay for longer time - sure, I would do some investigation. But even then, I'd probably be looking more into things like history of the server or the owner's previous projects rather than check into files themselves. Case in point - Asterios, probably one of the largest projects ever (commonly 10k+ online even these days and has been open for almost 20 years now) is based on L2j afaik... Investigative /bump

Over 195 posts in this thread and we still cannot help ourselves. You know what you and I remind me of?

Chip and Dale the overly friendly chipmunks.

According to what I read you can find out if its retail or L2J in under 10 minutes. Not much time if you ask me. Like testing geodata and fall damage etc. I will find that darn thread.

I will see if I can find that post here. Wanna have some fun and look at non existent posts here with a date of 1969?

Go here viewforum.php?f=14&start=5650

The admin should clean that out. Probably make the board run a tad better.

Interesting Post /bump
