family guy stands for making jokes on the "common sense"
with such stuff as criticizing others vocabulary, voice or just making fun of usual things that we don't even care about anywhere like that 1-2light-stripe when you close your eye and peter can't catch it, or when he jumps up from a couch in the feeling of victory and while most movies end here, he doesn't know how to come down...etc

simpsons stand for everyday comedy that suits both children and adult, like father-son relation ship, dealing with drugs, dealing with pranks etc-etc which is casual in a lot of cartoons, but simpsons take it to a waaay higher level
it has some "family guy type" jokes, very rarely, but like when the comic guy pretends that wikipedia knows more then god or when marge says that they can't live like crabs and homer says they sure dude then act like it

south-park stood for the same as simpsons but some were more for adult, or just adult w/o limitation to children, now it's all about epic problems
