leech your cougar that's the best way. as far as i know it's not like hatchlings that you need them to attack the monster to gain exp. it'll be better to use a fighter character to level it on passive mobs since as you said you're not leveling your EE anymore

trust me, for a support character like me, that's th best way. and you won't even notice that 100% off your exp. :D

i wouldn't dare to level it with me in FoD lol
